Phellinus linteus, often called Mesima and known as Sanghuang in traditional Chinese medicine, is a functional mushroom with a long history of use throughout East Asia. It contains polysaccharides, polyphenols, triterpenes, flavonoids and other compounds now being studied for immune signaling, inflammatory pathways, oxidative stress, metabolism and cellular resilience.
What is Phellinus linteus?
Phellinus linteus is a bracket fungus, meaning it grows as a hard woody shelf on the side of a living tree rather than as a soft cap and stem on the ground. It favors mulberry and other hardwoods, grows slowly over years, and is tough enough that traditional preparation always involved long decoction rather than simply eating it. Wild specimens are genuinely scarce, which is why most modern material is cultivated.
Mesima and Sanghuang
Mesima is the Japanese name, taken from the island where prized specimens were collected. Sanghuang is the Chinese name, literally referencing the yellow fungus of the mulberry tree. Both names point at the same organism, and both signal how much regard it carried long before anyone isolated a polysaccharide from it.
Traditional use
In traditional East Asian practice it was simmered into long decoctions and used as a tonic for general constitution and recovery. That record explains why the mushroom was studied at all. It is history and ethnobotany, and it is not clinical evidence. We keep those categories separate on purpose.
Polysaccharides and polyphenols
The most studied constituents are its polysaccharides, which are long chains of sugars that immune cells and gut bacteria interact with, and its polyphenols, which are plant and fungal compounds studied for antioxidant behavior. Systematic reviews of Phellinus linteus polysaccharides now cover how they are extracted, purified and structured, and how structure appears to change activity. Practically, that means results depend heavily on how the mushroom was prepared.
Immune signaling
Preclinical work indicates that Phellinus linteus polysaccharides engage immune cells and influence the signals they send. On the human side, a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial examined a Phellinus linteus extract and immune markers. That is a meaningful step up from cell studies and still a single trial with a specific extract. We describe it as promising early human evidence, nothing more.
Inflammatory balance
Reviews describe effects across inflammatory signaling pathways in laboratory models. Balance here means the body's normal ability to raise an inflammatory response and then resolve it, which is a research theme rather than an outcome we can promise you will feel.
Antioxidant and cellular resilience
Polyphenol-rich fractions of this mushroom show antioxidant activity in laboratory assays, and cellular stress-response work follows from there. Antioxidant activity measured in a test tube is not the same as an antioxidant benefit measured in a person, and the literature is clear about that distinction.
Metabolic health
Animal and cell studies have looked at lipid and glucose handling with Phellinus linteus extracts. Human metabolic data is thin. This is an open research question, not a claim.
Gut and immune connections
Because its polysaccharides are fermentable fungal fiber, part of what they do happens in the colon, where resident bacteria break them down and the products of that fermentation interact with the gut lining and nearby immune tissue.
