Hydration Is More Than Drinking More Water
Water is only half of hydration. The other half is minerals, and knowing which hydration ideas are established science and which are not.

The question: you drink plenty of water, so why do you still feel foggy and flat by mid afternoon?
The short answer. Hydration is not only how much water you drink. It is how much of it actually gets into your cells, and that depends on minerals. Water plus minerals is hydration. Water alone is just water passing through.
What is going on inside. Your cells sit in fluid, and the balance of that fluid is controlled by electrolytes. An electrolyte is a mineral that carries a small electrical charge when dissolved, mainly sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride. Those charges are how your body moves water where it needs to go and how nerves send signals. This part is established physiology, not a wellness theory.
Why it affects performance. Even mild dehydration has been associated in controlled studies with worse mood, more perceived effort during tasks, headaches and reduced concentration. This is one of the most reliably reproduced findings in the whole everyday performance conversation.
Practical signs to watch. Dark yellow urine. Afternoon headaches. Feeling tired but not sleepy. Cramping. Feeling thirsty at the point where thirst is already a late signal. None of these are diagnostic on their own, but as a pattern they are worth acting on.
Simple things that help. Drink through the day rather than all at once. Eat foods that carry water and minerals, like fruit and vegetables. If you sweat heavily, work outside or train hard, replace minerals and not just fluid. If you have kidney, heart or blood pressure conditions, talk to your clinician before adding sodium or mineral supplements.
Being clear about the evidence. Some hydration ideas circulate online with far more confidence than the research supports. Structured or hexagonal water, sun charged water, specific sea salt protocols and daily sodium bicarbonate routines are traditional practices or emerging ideas, not established medical science. They may interest you, and some people like them, but they should not be presented as proven physiology. Established physiology is the electrolyte part. The rest is discussion.
