Before You Add Another Supplement, Build the Groundwork

Health does not begin with another bottle. It begins with the boring things that are already free, and mushrooms are a layer on top of that.

By Scott Burgess · Human Performance Architect · Founder & Formulator, Rhizomatic Gardens

The question: if mushrooms are so useful, why does Scott keep telling people to fix other things first?

The short answer. Because supplements sit on top of a foundation. If the foundation is shaky, the layer on top cannot do much. Water, food, movement, sleep and stress come first. Mushrooms are a layer, not a substitute.

Why this is unusual to hear from a supplement company. It is bad for a quick sale and good for an honest one. People who fix the basics and then add a targeted formula tend to notice something. People who add a formula on top of four hours of sleep and skipped meals usually do not, and then they blame the formula.

Hydration. Most people are running a little low most of the time, and the effects show up as exactly the things they blame on other causes: afternoon fatigue, headaches, foggy thinking.

Food quality. Food is information, not just fuel. Whole foods deliver nutrients in combinations your body evolved alongside. Highly processed food delivers calories with much of that context stripped out.

Movement and sleep. Movement is not exercise. It is not sitting still for eleven hours. Sleep is the single highest leverage thing on this list and the one most often traded away.

Then, thoughtful supplementation. Once the foundation is holding, a targeted formula has something to work with. That is when a mushroom stack starts to make sense, and it is why we organize ours around specific everyday needs instead of everything at once.

The takeaway

· Health does not begin with another bottle.

· Water, food, movement, sleep and stress are the foundation.

· Supplements are one layer added on top of that foundation.

· Fix the free things first, then add support with intention.
